Are car owners obligated to pay for misdiagnosed repairs?

We took our 2001 Prism to a car repair shop because it kept stalling and stuttering upon acceleration. They said it needed a new fuel pump and filter. They said this would cost $400.00. After they fixed these parts they called and said that did not fix the problem but it looked like it needed to be replaced anyway. After further examination, now they are saying it just need a new MAP sensor. My question is, are we obligated to pay the original $400.00.

In my opinion I would tell them you took the car in to get the problem fix and the problem was not took care of so you shouldnt pay if anything tell them to put your old parts back on. If they get a attitude with you after putting the old parts back on take it some where else because it seems they dont know what they are doing the could easly check the fuel pump pressure with a gage w/o having to replace it.
