2002 Other Chevrolet Models AC shuts my car off

I have a 2002 Chevy Prizm. Everytime I turn on my AC, my vehicle shuts off. This problem does not happen when I turn on the heater. What seems to be the problem and about how much to fix - can I fix this myself

Sounds like the compressor is locked up. Remove belt and see if pulley will turn with AC on (ign. on, turn by hand), don't start engine.

If not the compressor will have to be replaced.

Does the belt squeal when AC is on?
