2001 Other Chevrolet Models check engine light on

My check engine light has been coming on and going off periodically for the last couple of weeks. I recently noticed car was running rough as in slowing, then back to normal, then slowing,etc. Recently I found that when shifting from reverse to drive, the car does not want to go forward and yesterday, completely stopped moving at all. No matter what gear it is in, the car just sits, no matter howmuch gas i apply. What could be the problem?

sounds like internal transmission failure. double check the transmission fluid level, if it is ok transmission problem.
