The vehicle is a chevy c-100 pickup truck. The problems are 1. The heat guage stays on cold no matter how long you drive it 2. The heat comes out when the engine warms a little, but the blower is not working. As far as the guage goes, wouldn't a bad thermostat typically cause the vehicle to heat up and the gauge to go hot instead of the opposite?

Try grounding out the wire going to the coolant switch and if the guage goes up it can be your coolant switch. You could also have a bad theromstate. They are easy enough to change an ddfairly cheap, try chaning that first.
