1985 Other Chevrolet Models turbo 400 transmission

i have a 400 turbo tranmission it has never slipped never given me any problems but now i have to shift it in and out of reverse to get the tranmission to go into gear if you go strait to drive it is like there is no tranmission but if i shift it back and forth from park to reverse it will take off after a bit and works great shifts fine in all gears what could be the problem? or is my tranmission junk

If you have checked the fluid and it is up to full, then yoursprag clutch may be going, especially if you have done some neutral slam like starts. Have a local trans guy look at it. They should be able to diagnose it without removing itor tearing it apart.
