Electrical problem

I just changed my spark plugs, wires and distributer cap. When i bought the spark plugs they told me the gap should be.045 but i looked in a repair manual(after i installed them) and it says it should be .080. I installed the .045 and ran the car but it was shakey and felt like it wanted to stall. I checked the wires to make sure they were in the plugs correctly. My two questions are 1. Can the gap make that much differance? and 2. If i crossed the wires while installing them and started the car how bad it that?
