1972 Other Chevrolet Models over charging

1972 Other Chevrolet Models V8 Two Wheel Drive Manual

my alt is charging to =17 amps changed the external reg.
changed the alt still over charging
looked over the wires under the dash and changed 1
from the key to the firewall

if i do not hook this wire up it will not charge
if i do it charges and the amps keep going up
?

17 amps shouldn't be anything to worry about. Your alternator is probably around 35 -40 amp max. Especially if you have your headlights or a/c on. However if it is charging at 17 volts then it is overcharging and check for a bad battery or a sulfated battery.
