How to remove the transmission?

How do you remove the transmission? Does the engine need to come out?

No, generally you suspend the engine on a support fixture, remove axles, mounts, any wiring to the transmission, cables, torque converter bolts, housing bolts etc. and remove the transmission from the side.

Having said all that, I like to remove the entire engine/transmission from the top. A lot more work, but you can change other things (front and rear main seals, axle seals, water pump for example) a lot easier and give the assembly a closer inspection than you could with it in the car.
