both the parking brake & battery idiot lights on the dash stay on

why???

Most likely your alternator is not putting out sufficient voltage.

Most auto parts stores will check the alt. (on car) for free. Output should be 13.5 to 14.5V, you can also check output with a multimeter, measuring DC volts.

If alternator is the problem, I would either have it rebuilt at an auto electric shop, or get one from Toyota.
