1976 Chevy Nova Coil spring installation

I've rented a coil spring compressor. I can only compressor the coil so far because half of it is in the frame...Trying to install this has been very frustrating...I cannot get the upper ball joint to completely fit into the steering knuckle. When I get close, then the upper control arm lifts up. Hammering it down does nothing. I have a jack lifting the lower control arm. What am I doing wrong?

you ae probably hitting the coil spring compressor causing the arm to lift. try repositioning the spring compressor so it won't hit the frame.
