Hi, I bought a 1996 Monte Carlo LS, 111,000 miles, Engine 3100 SFI VE. Latley the car begins to knock when its cold and when I accelerate it hesistates, once the car warms up the problem disappears but will reset and resume when it sits overnight.

All of my fluids are full, please help, thanks.

Hi Steve,

Would you describe this as a tick from the top of the motor, or more of a knock from the bottom?

When you got the car was the oil real dark, and when changing does it get dark very quick?

Lower end is usually bearings going bad, upper noise is usually a lifter or oil flow problem.

IT may help to see if any codes are stored in the pcm.

Definatley more of a tick on the top. I'm taking it in for a diagnostic today. The oil looked fine.

Would either of those be very costly? I only have $300 or so to spend.

Depending on the severity of the tick, it may be charactoristic.

The hesitation may not be related to the tick.

This morning I left the car warm up for about 3 minutes and the tick went away and I got no hesitation.

I wonder if there is a vacuum leak that is sealing itself up when it gets hot. The intake manifold gaskets were a problem on these. You can spray carb cleaner around the gasket and see if the idle changes when it is cold.

Were their any codes present?

Perhaps a coolant temp sender is out of spec causing a early rich condition.

(The tick may still not be related only in that it is a symptom happening at the same time as the hesitation. That is, the tick may remain there once the hesitation is solved.)

I won't be able to take it in for a reading until Tuesday, someone else suggested The intake manifold gaskets, I will try that.

Does it sound to you like it would be dangerous for me to drive it though?
