I have a 2002 Monte Carlo which has started ticking rather loudly, it isn't bad when I first start the car but gets worse as the motor heats up. I pulled off the front valve cover and found ALOT of sludge buildup and I pulled out each of the push rods and found that some of the ends that sit in the rocker arm arm worn and are now kind of oval instead of round. Is this the source of my problem, if not, what would be making it tick so bad?

Yes I would say that is your problem, best thing to do at this point is flush the block(then refill with clean engine oil, you may have to do it twice, before its all gone, (unfortunately). Hopefully you dont have to replace the push rods, the ticking is because the oil cant come up through the rods to form that cushoning, between the rod and the rocker arm, thus causing the push rod to hit the rocker arm making the tick. Change the pcv valve too, for good measure.
