When I start the car, while on "Outside Air" setting, the air conditioning system knocks for a minute and stops. If I turn the car off and again, it doesn't make a knocking sound until the next time the car is shut off and started again. If I switch to the "Recirculation" setting, then it doesn't make a knocking sound. It sounds like it's coming from the top of the passenger side dashboard. Any ideas?

There is an electronic part that controls the air condition outside and inside circulation. It is behind the Glove Compartment. To change it , remove the Glove compartment, and you will see it on your right hand side. Just a few screws and an electrical plug and that is.
As soon as you change it, the knocks will end. That part is known as an actuator with the following numbers:
ACD# 15-73517
GM #15844096
