I have a whining noise coming from the engine that sounds like the noise from the radio but its not. It is mostly when I start the car up and during acceleration. The noise is almost non existent once at cruising speed. It kind of sounds like an air leak of some sort. I had a check engine light that sometimes goes on but most of the time its off. I had the codes checked and all that was listed was a bad thermostat. I dont think its the thermo. I feel like it might be a bad mass airflow sensor. On a couple of occasions I have had the engine shake briefly right after starting as if the engine was going to die but it smooths out. I have 90,300 miles. Any suggestions? Thanks

First of all, you should have your thermostat replaced if the computer threw a code for that. All it takes is a single incident of overheating to blow a head gasket.

As for the whining noise, that wouldn't come from your MAF sensor. It could be your water/power steering/A/C compressor or even the ABS pump. (Over the years I've heard some very strange noises from that pump, even when it's not supposed to be operating)

Your best bet is to duplicate this noise while at idle and in park. Use a mechanic's stethoscope to get a better listen and to isolate the sound.

If it only happens while in drive, then it's quite possible that it isn't your engine but a wheel/hub or suspension component. (Axle/CV joint)

If I've helped you, please vote for me as I depend on this to pay my bills. Thanx, Ernest.

My 04 ss does all of that. Sounds like water in the engine? Mine does it when I turn as well as when I start it and accelerate. The chevy mechanic told me it is air in the radiator and is very hard for them to get it out.
