we have a 2003 chevy monte carlo ss that has been cutting back and running ragged for a couple of weeks now. my son put one of those diagnostic tools on it and it read misfire on multiple cylinders, he thinks it needs a fuel pump or possibly a catalytic converter (gassy smell in car). my daughter has been driving the car for about a year now, almost always on empty. this car has never had a tune up.

I would start with a good tune up. Also, there is a good chance the converter is plugged and it should be checked too. As far as the gas smell, if you have cyenders that are missing, there is a build up of gas in them and you could smell it. Also, this could contribute to a catylatic converter problem. Start with the tune up and check the converter.
