6 cylinder front wheel drive automatic.

i replaced the ignition lock/key in my car in June of this year. Had no problems until it got cold outside. When this happens the car will not start or even turn over? Thought it was the pass lock issue but did the 10 minute key thing, and this did not help. On nice sunny days like today it's 35 but the sun is shinning the car started! Any ideas?

Hi,

When the car doesn't start, does the engine crank? Also, is the security light flashing on the dash when you try starting it?

Nope it doesn't even crank I turn the key to the start position and nothing. The gauges all work and the lights come on but no motor running. And yes for the security light flashing. I'm (my brother) is putting a new ignition switch and key in (from the junk yard) some time this week! I hope that fixes it.

Hi again. If you are replacing the ignition key and tumbler, it may not help. Have you checked for power to the starter? When the key is in the start position, you should get 12 volts to the small wire on the starter. Try that before replacing the switch.

Let me know what you find. If you are not getting power, then you are most likely right and it's a security problem.

Shawn70,

I know it's been a several years since the issues. Do you remember the results from the voltage test, or did you just put a different ignition switch in?

Good morning,

We sometimes hear back from people when they attempt repairs.

When we do not, we assume the car was successfully repaired.
