2000 Chevy Monte Carlo temperature gage

While driving I noticed the temp. gage stopped working and dropped below the 140 mark. There is no coolant leak visable, the heater/defroster works well (blowing hot air).There has been no check engine light or warning lights of any kind.The coolant levels are ok also(in raidiator and reserve tank).
Any suggestions would be great.

3.4 L engine? The sender is located on the intake manifold under the throtle body. If you can gain access to it (1 wire) then ground it to see if the gauge goes up, if it doesnt there is a problem between the sender and the dash, If it does the sender could be bad. Is it still dead or did it come back?

It turns out the t-stat was frozen in the open position not letting the temp. to get hot enough to register on the gage. After I replaced the stat the temp. gage is now working properly
