1998 Monte Carlo with 70,000 miles. Temperature gauge shoots all the way over to "hot" and light comes on approx. 4 minutes after starting the car. Heater blows out just cold air. There is plenty of coolant in the reservoir. Also notice a "whirr" sound coming from under the hood. Does this sound more like the thermostat, heater core? Water pump, possibly?

I'd say start by replacing the thermostat cheap fix and folow it with the water pump check-
