1996 Chevy Monte Carlo transmission problems

my monte carlo will not go into drive . i have to put it into reverse first and drive back a little then shift to drive and then it will go into drive and go . after it goes into drive i have no problem after that with drivabilty it shifts fine and i go anywhere . but if its sits for awhile or overnight i have to do the reverse then drive first. or all it will do is rev up .

you should check the shift cable adjustment first.Also,check the trans fluid with the enging running and the trans warm.Make sure it's full and clean.
