1996 Chevy Monte Carlo transmission problems

My monte carlo will not go into drive. I have to put it into reverse first and drive back a little then shift to drive and then it will go into drive and go. After it goes into drive I have no problem after that with drivabilty it shifts fine and I go anywhere. But if its sits for awhile or overnight I have to do the reverse then drive first. Or all it will do is rev up.

You should check the shift cable adjustment first. Also, check the trans fluid with the enging running and the trans warm. Make sure it's full and clean.
