2007 Chevy Malibu RE: Temp. guage out

2007 Chevy Malibu 6 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic

I noticed that my tempture guage was not working yesterday on a 35 mile trip at about half way I happened to see the temp. guage was on complete cold and I know it is not right. What could be causing this and is it of great concern on these newer cars I am not sure?

possible bad temp sensor.
