2006 Chevy Malibu Rear Turn Signal Bulb Replacement

How do you remove the inner protecive plate from this car to gain access to the turn signal bulbs?

to replace the rear turn signal bulb perform the following:

open the rear compartment
remove the screws from the tail lamp
from the inside of the rear compartment, pull back the side trim panel then remove the wing nut from the tail lamp.
pull the tail lamp rearward to disengage the lamp from the quarter panel.
now you have access to replace whichever bulb needs it
