2003 Chevy Malibu Engine Light

This morning I was driving and turned on the cruise control. When I did this, the check engine light went on. It doesn't turn off. I haven't disconnected the battery due to the fact I was on my way to work. The car drives fine, but I did notice when I turn on the cruise control, there is a clicking sound. Could this problem be caused by the cruise control? Also, I use the cruise control everyday for about an hour drive, and noticed this morning I left it on yesterday over night.

Have the vehicle scanned for codes. Leaving the cruise on overnight is not a problem.
