Last year, I replaced the original transmission with a GM factory rebuilt one. The job was done at a Chevrolet dealership. Afterwards, I learned that the mechanic had to program the new transmission to work with the vehicle. If the work had not been done at a Chevrolet dealership, the repair shop would not have had the code to program it!
1) Can you confirm this?
2) I currently have a couple of bad valve lifters. The camshaft has become slightly deformed as a result. I have purchased new valve lifters and a new camshaft. I hesitate having the work done, though, in that the job entails lifting the engine from the vehicle.
My question is: Is there a special computer code that is needed for this job, as well? Or can a knowledgable, non-dealership mechanic, familiar with this type of a repair, do it?
