Engine Performance problem

My car stalls intermittently while driving and acts as if it is grasping for air. I have trouble starting it, but once it gets going it is fine for awhile. Any stopping could cause a stall at any time.
It is as if my car is choking or gasping when it stalls.
What could this be?
