2001 Chevy Malibu Major oil loss

What causes a large loss of oil from the front of the 2001 Chevy Malibu 6cyl. after starting and hearing some ticking and knocking before turning off engine?

Make sure oil filter is tight and oil pan bolt, if either is loose it would cause a major loss of oil.
