Engine Mechanical problem
2001 Chevy Malibu 6 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic

Hi,

I am currently in the process of replacing my cylinder head gaskets. In the Haynes manual, it says, "The mating surfaces of each cylinder head and block must be perfectly clean when the head is installed."

I've had the heads machined but not the engine block. So as far as the block is concerned, I was wondering how clean is "perfectly clean"? Should it look brand new? Because I don't think that's possible unless I take the entire engine out and have the block machined.

I have cleaned it thoroughly. There are no signs of oil or gasket residue. It is obvious however that is has not been machined.

So basically all I want to know should okay as long as the block has no signs of residue or debris? Or does it have to look shiny new?

Thanks,
Thomas

No it doesn't have to look brand new, basically that just means scrape all the old gasket off because they like to stick when they have failed due to overheating. Make sure there is no old gasket at all left on there, if it's all gone then you're OK
