2001 Chevy Malibu clean lifters

What's the best way to clean your lifters? I've heard to sustitute a quart of oil with a quart of ATF for 3000 miles might do the trick.

why do they need to be cleaned. were they making noise. if they are bad i would suggest replacing them.
