2000 Chevy Malibu power surge

When going uphill approximately 45 to 60 miles an
hour, the engine surges. I have a tachometer and
it shows as a power increase. About 20 rpm. I was told this might be a fuel pump problem but I don not bielieve this is the problem. This is my question.

Has the check engine ligt come on? Also, have you checked for vacuum leaks? Finally, you may want to check fuel pump pressure to make sure it is producing enough. Here is a HOW TO for checking it:
