Electrical problem
2000 Chevy Malibu 6 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic
----------------------------------------------------------------
car recently had engine work performed. After the car was home with us, a family member who suffers from dementia tried to stick a key (not the actual car key) in the ignition switch and now I cannot get the switch to turn. My mechanic suggested that a security alarm was tripped and that he can reset it, however, I am trying to avoid another towing charge. Anyway that I can reset it myself or do I need to install a whole new ignition switch.

if you can still use the orignal key and it turn ok try this. make sure the key is off for 10 sec. try to crank the engine then release the key watch for the security light to blink. leave the key on for 10-30 min. until the security light stops blinking. turn the key off for 10 sec and try to restart. let me know what happends.

The problem is that none of the keys will turn in the ignition switch. I'm wondering if the lock cylinder was damaged? If it is just a security issue, then how do I reset it so that a key will turn? I tried disconnecting the battery for about 10 minutes all to no avail. Not sure if there is some sort of procedure to solve this problem
