why would my 99 malibu start up fine then withn a few minutes just shut off, then wont re-start for several minutes after?

Is there a check engine light on. May be a possible pass lock sensor going bad. Is there a security light on

Yes it's on check engine, but everything else seems fine, just the check engine light.
