Latley I have been having a problem with my engine backfiring and coughing and sputtering when I gun the engine. I noticed that if I have my son gun the engine and durring the coughing and sputtering I put my ear to the back seat and listen to the fuel pump, the whurring sound goes up and down and is erratic, but when he lets off and it returns to idoling the fuel pump sound returns to a constant sound.

So my question is, should the fuel pump pretty much always have a constent sound if it is working properly.

By the way I have changed the fuel filter, the MAP sensor and the Mass Air Flow sensor.

Thanks

To find out what's going on with the fuel pressure is you need to up a fuel pressure gauge and monitor it, with and w/o the pressure regulator.
