1999 Chevy Malibu fuel gauge

not sure what is wrong with fuel gauage. form time to time the needle drops down to empty and the light comes on. even after i put gas in it. if anyone can help me with this it would be appreciated.

first check the connections on the fuel tank. Disconnect the battery first. check the wires and ground, make sure they are clean and tight. then rehook the battery, if that does not help then the problem would be in the fuel gauge sending unit located inside the fuel tank,
