1999 Chevy Malibu Brake Light Switch Replacement

I purchased a replacement brake light swtich and located the old one under the dash. I'm struggling to remove it. There's obviously some "trick" to removing it from the two metal tabs holding the threaded end in place. How do I get it out?

Remove the switch from the retainer by grasping it, turning the switch 90° counterclockwise, and pulling it toward the rear of the car.
