Engine Performance problem
1998 Chevy Malibu 4 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic

My daughter was just driving the car and it simply shut off. This also happened to my son driving the same car. The last time it did it, I went out at midnight to try and get it home. It started but would not idle. It would start while holding the throttle down just about all the way. It was running very rich. I started driving it home and kept the rpms up by just staying in 1st and 2nd gear. The response while I was accelerating was very good so I figured it was getting the fuel it needed. When you came to a stop light as the rpms fell off it would try to die so I would have to feather the throttle to keep it running. There was no "Check Engine" light on. I hooked up my scanner to it but there aren't any pending codes, no hard codes, nor does anything seem to be out of the normal range.

Have you checked fuel pump pressure? Also, have you checked the catylatic converter to make sure it isn't plugging?
