1998 Chevy Malibu call stalls

I have a 1998 Chevy Malibu with 160,000 and whenever I come to a stop my engine will loose power and my rpm needle will keep going up to about 1.5 and back down to normal and also my lights on the dash will dim same with my headlights. Also when I am idling my car will get a surge and want to take off and it will idle very rough sometimes as well. This last week my car has stalled out about 10 times when slowing down to make a turn and when I go to start it back up I have to press on the gas petal or it wont start. It wont do it all the time, but lately it has been happening more and more. I hope you can help answer this before I have to bring it in and spend more on repairs then what the car is worth.
