1997 Chevy Malibu Fuel Guage

My 1997 Malibu has a problem with the gas guage. When I started it the needle went past full all the way to below the empty peg and will not return. What the heck happened? Guage shot? wire loose? Fuel pump going to heck. It starts and runs and no fuses are blown. Has me baffled? Please help.

sounds like a possibe fuel level sensor is going bad and needs to be replaced.
