I have a 2000 Chevy Lumina, 115,000 miles, with a blown headgasget. The mechanic wants to charge $1300 to replace the gasget (at the minimum, due to he doesn't know if the heads are warped).

I found an engine (3.1 6 cyl) at a junkyard for $300. How long should it take to change out the engine?

What should I look for when purchasing a used engine?

Is it a better idea to change the engine instead of having the repairs done? What will save me the most money?

This car is my son's and he needs it for commuting to college.

hi
the one problem you may find is the junkyard engine may not even run and if it does how long will it last , and even if it did it would be reccomended to replace belts , hoses , things like that , and lets say you put it in and i didnt work , you would have to pay to r&r it again,

1300,00 for a head gasket on that engine is way too high ,
i would like to recommend either having it repaired (by someone else) or look at a reman engine from jasper or gm , they are cheaper than you think , and your son is driving it

jasper has a website i think its jasperengines.com and i think they have pricing on the page and a good nationwide warrany as the gm reman will have the same

thanks
jim
