Hello,

An engine can overheat due to having a stuck closed thermostat, a faulty water pump, inoperative cooling fan, bad radiator.

Flushing the cooling system can help with overheating but not when the fault is not bad coolant but a component like the thermostat, water pump, fan, or radiator failure.

Check to if the cooling fan come on when the engine is at operating temperature. An inoperative cooling fan can be due to bad fan relay/wiring, coolant temperature sensor or a bad fan motor.

Thermostat is one of the most common failure for overheating. When a thermostat fails at stuck closed position it does not allow coolant to flow thru the engine, which leads to engine overheating. Typically, with a stuck thermostat you will have noticeable temperature difference between the upper and lower radiator hose. One would be cooler than the other.

A faulty water pump can also prevent coolant from flowing properly and leads to overheating.

I have attached diagrams for a 1998 Lumina the last year it was produced, as the in 2006 Lumina was not in production.

Please let me know of any questions.
Thank you.
