Hi:
Has the check engine light come on? Also, is the middle of the temp gauge in the safe range?

It sounds like your "idle air control" IAC unit may be defective or just need cleaning. If you have, or have had, a check engine light while driving. The computer may have picked up a problem with this unit. The jerking, when you put the car in gear, is probably from the engine idling too fast.
If your temp gauge is holding in the middle of the scale on the gauge, that's 170 to 190 degrees and that is where you want it to run. Hope this helps.
