2000 Chevy Lumina 4 cyl Two Wheel Drive

My mother-in laws chevy lumina's theft deterrent 'thing" the dealer says needs to be replaced to make the car work(start) again. Is there any way to pay a cheaper price to turn it off, disconnect, out take the "thing" out of the car so it will run again?

I hate to say it, but they are the only ones that will have the proper tools to properly repair it. If you try to bypass it, most likely will not work.
