1999 Chevy Lumina My husband's car

I'm not sure if the year of his car is right but it is a Chevy Lumina Eurosport. Anyway, his hot light is on that indicates the car is running hot, however it is not. When he takes the cap off the engine the fluid runs over to the point he has to wash down the driveway. Even the overflow container is full. Why is his light coming on?

you will have to put a scanner on it to see if it is over heating. usually if the light comes on there is a problem
