1998 Chevy Lumina problems while driving

while i press on the gas the rpms shoot up and im only going 10mph. i dont know what the problem could be.

sounds like your transmission is slippling. check the fluid level, if ok then have the transmission checked out, if level is low then fill to proper level and we can go from there.
