1998 Chevy Lumina Engine light is on too!

My engine light is on, Car guages goes up to 260 and stay there for a little while but it eventually goes back down to the middle line. Heat is not working it comes on but doesnt get hot! What could be the problem?

Go to an autopart store and get your ecm scanned (it's free in most store).
Come back with the code(s) and we can start from there.
If your car overheats, don't drive it before you fix the problem.
