i have a cold start engine knock/ticking was told i had bad lifters i had them repaired but that did not stop the knocking/ticking what else could be making this knocking/ticking or did the mechanic just lie to me how many lifters does my 3.1 6 cyl have

I don't think it was lying as much as making a bad assumption. There is a revised piston kit for the 3.1 motors to solve this. However, GM says it is not detrimental to repairs and is a charactoristic of this motor. So if it bothers you, replace them. If it bothers you more to spend money on a noise then save your money.
