When I engage the transmission I have first gear for what seems to be a warm up period which is about 1.5 miles. I have to speed up til the transmission is pushed to its limit before it then shifts into second gear. I have third, but I do not have fourth at all. After the intial shifting into second gear I do not have first again until I stop the car and put it into park. The speedometer does not work either. Any ideas as to what is happening to this old work car?

Well a scan of PCM would tell but the VSS vehicle speed sensor is faulty. Located on thansaxle at end of engine. Without this trans does not know what speed yur at and when to shift.
