1997 Chevy Lumina fuel problem

I drive car about 5 miles. Humming starts from gas tank area. Gets louder while driving eventually gets quieter and shuts off. will start up again but will keep shutting off about every mile or so unless it gets hours of rest. Is it fuel injector or fuel pump?

Louder than normal pump noise is an indication of pump failure. Pump is in the tank where you are hearing the hum.So new pump is in order.
