1997 Chevy Lumina disconecting the air bag to do repairs on

1997 Chevy Lumina 6 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic

I am trying to find out what needs to be done to safly disable the air bag to do repairs on the collum, the turning signel switch is causing problems with the turning signels and the break lights.

There is a bright orange or yellow plug at the base of the column that will unplug the bag but simply disconnecting the battery for at least 5 minutes will disable all of them.
