1996 Chevy Lumina Automatic 160000 miles

One day last wk my car started sputtering & wouldn't go over 20 mph or so. Later, it was fine. Yesterday it went in the shop; nothing was found. Today, it started rattling, wouldn't accelerate again & it smelled awful, I'd say like rotten eggs. Oh, recently I got a new catalytic converter, but couldn't find a cause of the old one going bad (it was only 2 yrs old). It's a '96 Chevy Lumina with 160,000, but it's been taken care of well.

Based on your description, I would say the converter is bad again. Have you tried to disconnect it to see if changes the way it runs when this happens? Also, if you hear a ratteling, the inside of it may have become loose and causing it to plug at times. Take a rubber mallot and tap on it to see if that is where the noise is comming from.

Let me know.
