Air Conditioning problem

hello. my compressor (ac) will not start all of the time.
i charged the system with freon. and it will work while the car is running. i turn the ac off wait 30 sec, or so the compressor will not restart. sometimes it will sometimes it wont. (only when my wife is driving it wont work!)ha ha . sometimes when i rev up the motor it will start.
i can tap the clutch on the compressor and it will start.
is there some type of relay switch for the compressor?.
or do you think i just need to replace the compressor.
the freon is full.
