When you say your car is hot, what do you mean? Overheating?
Can you tell me what is your coolant temperature when you gauge is past the middle?
You can check with an autoscanner what temp your pcm is receiving from your sensor; and when you're at it, check for DTCs too.

Another question: Do your fans come on when you crank up your AC full blast with car idling? (they should within something like 3 minutes)

Now on another note, if your car is not overheating, I don't think it's necessarily abnormal for your gauge to pass the middle without the fans turning on. Some fans don't come on until the temp is 215-220F (thus past the middle on your gauge).

Another thing: don't rely to much on what your gauge is showing; especially in a high mileage car. Your gauge could be off because: it's defective, or your second coolant sensor is bad, or there's something wrong in the wiring. If you want an accurate temp reading, use an infrared thermometer, and check temp at thermostat housing.
